Backpacking!

Chad and I just returned from a fun time backpacking in the Great Bear wilderness. We signed up for this trip in May with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation and we signed up to help do trail maintenance in the backcountry for 5 days.

I would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone. Or to people who want to backpack but don't have a group to go with.

All we had to pack was our gear and clothes, there was a team of Backcountry Horsemen that packed in food and tools. We ate like kings in the backcountry, which I am not used to! We got to know some great people (2 of whom I work with), and we got to learn a lot about the wilderness areas in northern Montana that neither of us had been in before.

Other bonuses included:

  • eating LOTS of huckleberries, wortal berries and thumbleberries

  • no bear spottings

  • visiting an old forest service lookout

  • learning all that goes in to maintaining trails

  • no mirrors, cell phones, clothing decisions or internet for 5 days

  • no rain meant sleeping under the stars every night!

Here is the website to check out: Bob Marshall Wildreness Foundation

chop chop!

doesn't Chad look like a lumber jack?!

Stu is the horseman...he is the real deal folks! he even slept on the ground "so he wouldn't get soft"

That sounds really great! What an experience! I cut 20 feet of trail just in my Mother-in-law's property and was pooped! I ADMIRE REAL trail blazers!

What fun! I just got caught up on your blog and I can't believe how quickly your house is going up! Very cool. Not too much longer, I bet.

That is fantastic! What a great way to reenter backpacking when I'm full of head knowledge but need some practice (and a group). Kudos to you!
